One System. Every Level.

TryoutEngine covers two distinct evaluation needs that youth hockey associations face — skills-based testing for younger players and competitive tryout evaluations for older age groups. Both run on the same secure platform with digital scoring, audit trails, and instant reporting.

Your Tryout Process Has a
Credibility Problem.

Most evaluation tools digitize the clipboard: evaluators score 1–5, the software averages the numbers. It's faster than paper — but it's still the same methodology that produces inconsistent, indefensible results.

⚖️

Evaluator Bias

Judge A scores tough (mean: 3.2). Judge B scores easy (mean: 4.7). A simple average penalizes every player Judge A evaluated — and nobody catches it until parents complain.

🎲

Grouping Luck

A strong player stuck in a talented group looks average. A weaker player in an easy group looks great. Traditional averages have no way to adjust for who a player was matched against.

📉

Score Compression

Evaluators cluster around 3–4 on a 1–5 scale. The difference between your 12th and 18th ranked player might be 0.1 points — statistically meaningless, but it determines who makes the team.

🗣️

The Parent Meeting

A parent asks why their kid was cut. You pull up a spreadsheet average and say “they scored a 3.4.” That’s not a defensible answer — and it's not good enough for your program.

Your Evaluators Watch the Game.
Our Algorithm Finds the Truth.

TryoutEngine works within your existing tryout structure. Evaluators score the way they always have. The difference is what happens before and after — our algorithms calculate optimal rotations upfront, then our proprietary scoring engine transforms raw evaluations into rankings that hold up under scrutiny.

01

We Calculate Your Rotations

Our algorithm generates optimized shift rotations for your player pool, ice sessions, and evaluation goals. Every player gets mathematically balanced coverage across evaluators, groups, and positions — with minimized double-shifts, ghost shifts, and back-to-back sit-outs.

02

Evaluators Score Normally

Your evaluators score players during scrimmages and skills stations using familiar 1–9 scales on a mobile-optimized interface. No new methodology to learn. No changes to your ice time. We handle the data — you run the tryout.

03

You Get Defensible Rankings

You receive bias-corrected rankings with statistical confidence measures, natural-break tier assignments, and professional reports ready for your board — and any parent conversation.

Proprietary TrueEdge™ Scoring Technology

Digital Skills Testing
Built for the Ice.

The Minnesota Hockey HEP Skills Challenge is the standard for evaluating skating and puck control fundamentals at the Mite and 8&Under level. TryoutEngine digitizes the entire process — so your evaluators can focus on players, not paperwork.

Replace the Clipboard

Each evaluator gets a unique access code and a mobile-optimized timer built for on-ice use. Players are pre-loaded by station — tap a name, start the timer, and the score is recorded automatically. No handwriting to decipher, no manual data entry after the session.

Manage Sessions in Real Time

The administrative dashboard lets you drag and drop players between stations during the session. Handle late arrivals, station changes, and evaluator reassignments without disrupting testing. View scoring progress live as evaluators work.

Instant Player Reports

Best times are automatically selected from multiple attempts. Export results directly to Excel for final score calculations and individual player evaluation reports — the same format parents expect from the HEP program, generated in seconds instead of hours.

Secure & Auditable

Every score entry is logged with a full audit trail — who scored, when, and any modifications. Evaluator access codes automatically deactivate after the session completes. Admin changes are tracked separately.

HEP Mite Skills Challenge

05 Puck Control Weave & Accelerate 110 ft • 2 attempts

Goalie Skills Challenge

G1 Forward "C" Cuts 60 ft
G2 Backward "C" Cuts 60 ft
G3 Forward & Backward Telescoping Crease

All drills follow the Minnesota Hockey & Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine HEP standard. Times recorded to hundredths of a second. Best of two attempts used for final scoring.

Not Just Rankings.
Proof.

📊

Bias-Corrected Rankings

Automatic evaluator calibration ensures no single judge's tendencies distort the results. Every player's score is normalized to a level playing field.

🎯

Confidence Intervals

Every player ranking includes a statistical confidence measure. Know which placements are rock-solid and where the borderline calls are — before you make them.

📋

Professional Reports

Branded Excel workbooks with tier breakdowns, evaluator analysis, and ranking convergence — ready for your board meeting, coaching staff, or parent inquiries.

🔄

Algorithm-Calculated Rotations

Optimized shift rotations that maximize evaluation diversity while respecting your ice time, group sizes, and scheduling constraints. Every player is seen fairly — mathematically guaranteed.

📈

Convergence Tracking

Watch your rankings stabilize in real-time across tryout sessions. Know exactly when you have enough data to make confident decisions — and when you need one more skate.

🛡️

Tier Accuracy Analysis

See how system-generated tiers align with your coaching staff's assessments. Identify outliers, validate gut feelings, and build consensus before you post rosters.
